SMSC

Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural (SMSC) development and, within this, the promotion of fundamental British values, are taught, reflected upon and embedded fully throughout all aspects of school life.

At Leigh Beck Academy SMSC encompasses all areas of individual personal development, encouraging the children to think about the kind of people they aspire to be and the kind of world they aspire to create.

At Leigh Beck Infant and Nursery Academy, opportunities for SMSC permeate all aspects of the EYFS and KS1 curriculum.  Children and adults accept individual differences, respect each other and their surroundings and have regard for British Values.  Children are encouraged to take an active part in the world around them through a broad and rich curriculum.

British Values

The development of SMSC and British Values is crucial because it develops the whole child, preparing them for their future lives and to be active citizens. It allows children to develop a deeper understanding of the wider world, develop an understanding and empathy of themselves and others. They recognise diversity and respect themselves and others and empowers them to take responsibility for their positive role in society later in life.

It allows them to thrive in a rapidly changing society, exploring issues of justice, values and culture in their own contexts and the wider world. Children learn how to make decisions that promote and sustain better emotional health and wellbeing, teaching them to keep themselves safe and to become happy, healthy, respectful individuals that have a love of life and develop lively, enquiring minds These are the skills and attitudes we believe will allow our students to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

At Leigh Beck Infant and Nursery Academy we, therefore, aim to provide learning opportunities to explore and develop:

  • Children’s own values and beliefs
  • Their own spiritual awareness
  • Their own high standards of personal behaviour
  • A positive, caring and tolerant attitude towards other people
  • An understanding of their social and cultural traditions
  • An appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures.
